They used to benchmark against BMWs of the same class, now they’ve decided another car is better...
The car they consider better than a BMW? A Camry! I’ve been saying for years that BMW has been going downhill, but now we have a manufacturer deciding that their handling is milquetoast compared to the standard people mover chosen by people that don’t care about cars.
That’s pretty harsh. Also pretty kind to Toyota.
On the other hand, it makes me wonder if their closer relationship since the Ford reduced their share of the company and Toyota picked it up is somehow involved.
Still ugly

Or Mazda has decided that marketing to enthusiasts was a dead end and they would be better off targeting the car that is the biggest seller.

But you need to have some differentiator. Everyone in the mainstream mid-size market is trying to compete with the Camry. You need something to stand out. Mazda always did that with being fun to drive at a lower price point. There are only so many ways to stand out...

New camry is hideous. If you get the XSE in a black or white it looks okay from some angles. However you do get a 300-something horsepower V6 which ain’t too shabby.

The F82 M4 did not wow me. Especially after driving an E36 M3 the day before
But yeah that’s still pretty harsh. Damn Mazda. Then again, when was the last time anyone considered BMW’s as being the Ultimate Driving Machine?

I can’t deny that they definitely have power. Haven’t driven one, but they haven’t been that bad for at least a couple generations. Certainly no worse than a contemporary BMW in the last ten or so years.
Still, so ugly.

Among enthusiasts it might be true that we see through the marketing, but I bet it was a deciding factor for a 50-something person in Bellevue today that purchased a crossover coupe or some other random monstrosity with a roundel on it.

BMW made that decision. Cadillac is learning first hand that marketing to enthusiasts is not working out with their dismal sedan sales.
